This new construction, three-storey high school started with a large overall site cut and fill. Once this was completed, the footings and foundations were laid. The base structure is load-bearing masonry and precast with structural steel. The school is essentially split into two sections – classrooms along one side and a large cafeteria and gymnasium on the other. The architect, Snyder & Associates designed the building to be modern and light-filled and allow for a range of classroom types, including computer, food services, auto shop, wood shop, music as well as the traditional book-based classes. A variety of texture, colours and materials were used such as aluminum paneling, curtain walls and an assortment of stone/ brick and wood.
One of the construction challenges that were faced was due to the position of the school. The school is situated tight to Bur Oak Ave making construction of the west side a challenge. All work had to be accessed from the north and therefore most of the exterior veneer had to start on this side and work back around to the front of the building.
The project faced an unpredictable delay – an abnormally record-setting amount of rain over several months pushed back exterior masonry and outside work. The delay was accounted for early on though, allowing the school board to arrange for alternate facilities for the first two months of school. Although this was not an ideal situation, the school board was understanding and was very satisfied with the results.
