This project consisted of significant renovations and a new build around the main City Hall building of the County of Simcoe. This challenging project required that there be minimal to no disturbance or impact on the regular day-to-day activities of the city staff as the existing facility remained occupied and operational throughout the 22-month project.
Working with Ted Handy and Associates architects, the new construction consisted of a basement space and new two-storey addition which delivered over 70,000 SF of interior space. This consisted of a new main entrance area, offices, meeting rooms, community meeting halls, large cafeteria, data centre, workshop and loading area, along with ancillary support areas. The structural system comprises a steel frame with composite deck floor system and the building is clad in curtain wall, acrylic stucco and zinc siding with a structural steel back-up.
Exterior work included development of surface parking for 150 cars, numerous courtyards and newly landscaped grounds.
This unique project included many sustainability features such as a geothermal energy system, xeriscaping, high-performance glass, heat recovery systems, carbon dioxide control, photocell-lighting control of ventilation systems, solar domestic hot water and photovoltaic solar energy generation.
