As part of our commitment to achieving health and safety in our workplace, we have established a rigorous Occupational Health and Safety Program that ensures we not only meet but exceed the legislated requirements described in the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
The objectives of this policy are to:
- Provide and maintain a healthy and safe workplace for all workers and visitors.
- To foster and develop safe practices and systems.
- To provide written procedures and instructions that clearly detail safe work practices.
- To ensure compliance with legislative requirements and current industry standards.
- To educate, inform, train and supervise employees, contractors and site visitors to ensure their continued health and safety.
- To provide support and assistance to our staff and involve them in consultation on safety issues.
A well-trained, engaged work force is crucial to fostering a safe environment and we encourage employees to actively participate in safety meetings, job hazard assessment development, hazard identification and comprehensive field level risk assessments. Every employee, from project managers to administrators, supervisors, estimators and tradespeople, not only receives extensive training but is also given specific responsibilities designed to foster a safe work culture. This strong ‘individual responsibility’ system and top-down impetus for health and safety is exemplified by management who perform various documented inspections, investigations and reports at regular intervals.
All of our staff are thoroughly trained on a wide variety of topics so they have the skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and identify hazardous situations. Our Health & Safety manual, which is regularly updated, is present at all our work sites and outlines minimum safety and training requirements, processes and procedures. We believe this is vital to the function of our health and safety program and that it empowers our entire workforce with the knowledge it needs to produce safety leaders. We hold our sub-contractors to the same high standards.
Percon employs a full-time Health & Safety Manager who ensures compliance with our safety program and ensures a culture of continuous improvement. We also retain a third-party safety consultant to conduct regular inspections of all our worksites.
